Directional Cues
Directional cues are visual or contextual elements that guide users’ attention or behavior within an interface. These may include arrows, gaze direction in images, animation, whitespace, or microcopy that nudges users toward key actions. Designers use directional cues to strengthen clarity and reduce cognitive load, shaping how users move through a page or app. Effective cues feel natural, not forced, and align with user intentions.
For example, checkout pages may use subtle arrows toward “Continue” buttons, or a hero image may show a person looking toward key text. Even subtle spacing or button position acts as a directional signal. Used thoughtfully, these cues boost usability and conversion by making the next step obvious.
